“Sinclair’s philosophy was always to produce a well dressed man, rather than someone who stood out from the crowd. His clothes represent the epitome of English style: simple, elegant, understated and timeless.” – anthonysinclair.com
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first James Bond film. This fictional character has become the epitome of an English gent. He is a question at every quiz night, the only person who has ‘sky dived with the Queen’, the candy of many a girls’ eye, and the envy of most men. James Bond really is a British legend who has spurred a generation, and a true style icon.
We know that Ian Fleming is the man behind the icon, M is the person behind the missions, and Q is the guy behind the gadgets, but just who is behind Bond’s iconic suits? As the films have progressed so have the designers, a range of top names have worked to help make Bond the sartorial God he is.
A James Bond suit needs to exude wealth and sophistication whilst simultaneously appearing as though it could withstand a barrage of bullets without looking too haggard. It’s also an ensemble that represents the character, and there is nothing more characteristically English than a true bespoke Savile Row suit
Sean Connery was dressed by Ian Fleming’s tailor, Anthony Sinclair. Sinclair is famous for creating the Conduit Cut, (named after his premises on Conduit Street, Mayfair) and it is these suits that Connery wore for all his appearances as Bond. According to Anthony Sinclair, the Conduit Cut “defines a man of sophistication and good taste and is a continued testament to the maxim that ‘less is more’”. The Conduit Suit is a two button jacket with a natural shoulder, full chest, slender waist and slightly flared skirt, tracing the natural curve of the body to give a subtle hourglass shadow. Sinclair’s suits were often paired with British Turnbull and Asser double cuff shirts and ties. The Conduit Cut inspired the suits of George Lazenby. The suits he wears as James Bond are all variations of Sinclair’s signature style.

London tailor Cyril Castle was the man behind Roger Moore’s Bond, moving away from the traditional suit and pairing a jacket with a mismatched pair of trousers. It creates a slightly more relaxed look, whilst still airing on the right side of formal. Douglas Hayward took over from Cyril Castle and slimmed the silhouette slightly. Steer away from the flared trousers and wide shoulders that were popular in the 1970s, opting for something a little more fitted if you want to channel Moore’s Bond.

The 1980s saw the rise of the large shouldered power suits, and the suits worn by Bond, portrayed by Timothy Dalton, were no different. The jackets tended to be a full cut, giving much more room across the body than a fitted jacket worn by previous Bonds. Keeping to the slightly more casual feel of Moore’s Bond, many jackets featured a low button fastening, partnered with a loose fit trouser. Although a popular look for the 80s, a more fitted shoulder and trouser are a more flattering and modern choice.

Kim + Jeremy got engaged in Paris and totally fell in love with the city – I totally get that, Paris puts a spell on you :) Being so taken by Paris, it was Kim’s dream to find a quiet part of the city, away from the hustle and bustle,
This adorable couple wanted something totally different and entirely meaningful for their engagement session and decided on a 50′s inspired photo session that encompassed all the things they love. They infused bits and pieces of their loved ones into the shoot like the groom to be’s grandfather’s briefcase and hat and the bride to be’s grandmother’s engagement ring and wedding band. We totally LOVE that! Matthew Moore Photography snapped up all the pretty and there’s so much more right here in the full gallery!

From the Bride-to-Be… Wes and I were engaged in New York City in December of 2011. We have been dating for four years. One of the most important things to us in regards to our engagement shoot was to have pictures that were different from the norm. To accomplish that, we knew we would need an amazing photographer. I don’t think either of us realized just how lucky we were to have Matthew Moore Photography as our wedding photographers until our engagement shoot. They went above and beyond to bring the idea I had in my head to real life. Wes’ last name is Crabbe. Mine is Cook, thus making us the Cook-Crabbe wedding. We have decided to fully embrace this, as it gives us further solidification that we are, in fact, meant for each other.
One of my favorite hobbies is cooking, and one of Wes’ favorite hobbies is eating (again, proof that we are meant for each other), so we wanted that to be a part of our engagement shoot. While we did a few pictures around my townhome, the majority of our shoot was at a mid-century modern home in Dallas where we acted like a couple from the ’50s. I played a housewife who had been working diligently in the kitchen all day preparing a meal fit for an ideal husband, and Wes was a businessman who had just spent a long day at the office, and was now ready to come home and unwind with his wife. In the photographs, there are many nods to our relatives who we both have loved dearly, but unfortunately have lost. They include my Nana’s china and Wes’ papa’s hat and briefcase. I am also wearing my Nana’s engagement and wedding band in the photographs set in the ’50s. Although these are small details that will go unnoticed to many, they are incredibly special details for us. Our photographers did a beautiful job capturing the nature of our relationship, as I truly think you can feel our love and bond radiating from each photograph.

From the Mother of the Bride… The Kohl Mansion was so beautiful that it inspired us to do a somewhat Victorian theme. We decided to go with soft tones such as champagne, blush, cream and white with touches of baby blue. We wanted the look to be elegant, soft and pretty, reminiscent of a Victorian ball. We added several personal touches by incorporating pieces from our own home to make the mansion feel even warmer. We hoped to create a feeling that our guests were in our home having dinner and a lovely evening with us. I was touched and very pleased when a guest told me exactly that. Several years ago, we attended a wedding at The Kohl Mansion. Not only was it spectacular, but also it had warmth and magic to it that we could not put out of our minds. We’ve talked about that wedding and the venue a hundred times since then. I’m sure it was always in the back of our minds that we’d love Erica to be married there. The moment she told us they were engaged, The Kohl Mansion was mentioned. Erica was thrilled at the suggestion, and we immediately made an appointment. Once we met with the absolutely wonderful event specialists, Terri and Dianne, we booked right then and there. We will never forget Erica and Aaron’s wedding day! It was a dream come true.
From the Bride… I wanted the wedding to have a very soft, romantic and vintage feeling. The venue fit this theme perfectly, and we all fell in love with it immediately. My parents and I did all of the wedding planning. My mom and I did all of the designing and picked out every last detail ourselves. We also had wonderful vendors who made helped make planning a piece of cake! The day was incredible — I couldn’t stop peeking into the dining room because it looked so beautiful! Aaron and I both have so many special memories from our big day and were so grateful to be able to share it with our friends and family. For the style of our wedding, we wanted the wedding party to look very classic and elegant. The girls wore black, and boys wore black and white. The colors we chose for flowers and linens were very soft pink, blush, champagne and cream. We wanted the theme to feel romantic and vintage.
Walking into the Great Hall at the Kohl Mansion was like walking into an formal party perhaps thrown at the turn of the century. Warm wood paneling, the dramatic six-foot fireplace and floor-to-ceiling pained windows, murals and lush draperies all lent to the mood. The gorgeous room was complemented with an abundance of soft flowers set upon champagne-colored crinkle tablecloths. The finishing touch was the dark wood chiavari chairs, which were very elegant. The mood, however, was not formal or stuffy. Good friends and family created a wonderfully happy energy. The loud buzz of chatter and laughter was music to our ears! Speeches were touching, sincere … and funny, of course. Woody from Big Fun Disc Jockeys kept the dance floor packed for the entire dance portion of the evening.

Séamus Fahy - founder of Voltaire Diamonds What is the most unique thing about your business? Voltaire Diamonds is all done by appointment. I don’t have a jewellery shop, therefore I don’t have the overheads of a jewellery shop. It’s a nice environment, you’re getting top quality product at very competitive prices. A lot of my clients say they’re intimidated by jewellery shops. But you come in here and it’s relaxed, there’s no pressure on people and there’s no pushy sales techniques. We design the rings , but you can add your personal stamp if you want. What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in business? On day one, I should have set up with a website so it was geared up with search engine optimisation. I didn’t do that. So for the first two years I would have been on the third page of search results when you Googled engagement rings. Nobody goes to page three; very few people go beyond the first three or four on page one. About a year and half ago, I redesigned the website and made it SEO optimised. Now I’m at the top of page one. All of a sudden my business jumped. But if I had been at the top of page one from the beginning, I might have struggled to deal with all the business. What has been your major success to date? Still being in business four years later. Since I set up the business a lot of jewellery shops have closed. I opened a London office four or five months ago. I was finding through Google analytics that my business was getting a lot of hits in London. A lot of people are leaving Ireland now – people in the engagement ring phase of their life tend to be moving to London. The younger ones are off to Canada and Australia. Sales in London are starting to grow. The recession suits me perfectly; more and more people are looking for value for money now. I set up in late 2007. All my friends thought I was nuts, but at the time I didn’t know the recession was about to come. Right at the very start I managed to get great write-ups on the likes of Boards.ie and Weddings Online . The online forums are huge for me business, as is Facebook. My competitors haven’t copped on to that. Half of them don’t have a Facebook page, or if they do I haven’t seen it. There are around 18,000 fans of Voltaire on Facebook. With a jewellery shop, they rely on people walking past and calling in. I don’t have that. Reputation is everything. You still get people saying they’re off to Antwerp or New York to buy engagement rings, but I guarantee to beat those prices. You are sitting in New York and Antwerp here. The international price of diamonds is the price – there is no difference. We’re all buying at very similar prices. People think they can get better deals abroad, but they can’t. Who would you admire most in business and why? It’s probably Michael O’Leary for his no-nonsense approach. What piece of advice would you give to the Government to stimulate the economy? Try to reduce VAT rates for labour intensive businesses. I know they’ve done it for the tourism industry, but maybe there are other industries out there they could do it for. What would you say has been your biggest challenge? Initially when I set up the business, it was getting suppliers to actually take me seriously. I visited wholesale suppliers in Antwerp and London. Without a website, without the qualification from the GIA , no one took me seriously. I studied gemology with the GIA in London to get that level of credibility. The diamond business is all about trust. At the start everything was prepaid, now it’s all about credit. If I let down one supplier, it’s a very close-knit community – they all know each other. C/D: Has it helped your career that you were a math genius at Oxford? AG: Well, it helped my RAF career, understanding the technical aspects of flying airplanes. And it helped with the weapons planning I undertook for the Libyan bombing campaign we waged last year from Italy. C/D: What’s your favorite aircraft? AG: The F-4 Phantom . It’s basically 1960s technology—quirky. So it’s challenging. If you fly it well, it’s satisfying. C/D: How’d you come by the call sign “Dead Dog”? AG: They had me looking after a dog mascot my first week [in the RAF]. Unbeknownst to me, they removed him from the kennel and told me that the food I was feeding him had killed him. Of course, the dog was fine. He came to see me the next day. C/D: What’s the best thing about receiving the Order of the British Empire ? AG: It’s an honor that came in the wake of the 1997 land speed record [LSR], the supersonic record. I don’t know if it was right for me to accept it, but it was a fantastic recognition of the team’s effort. C/D: What’s the biggest hurdle to attaining 1000 mph? AG: Aerodynamics. Keeping the car on the ground. It took us five years to find the right shape. C/D: South Africa’s Hakskeen Pan is now the official site for the run? AG: Yes. At the moment, it’s the only good-quality surface I can find in the world, and I spent two years looking. In terms of load-bearing capability, Hakskeen Pan means we can make the [aluminum] wheels narrower, and when they are rotating 177 times per second [10,620 rpm], that’s worthwhile. It also gives us a much wider weather window—six to seven months. The course will be 12 miles long, and that’s enough. The problem is not acceleration; we can get to 1000 mph in four miles. The problem is slowing down. We have air brakes and two parachutes. Any one of those three should stop the car in four miles. C/D: Wheels that experience more than 50,000 g of centrifugal acceleration—doesn’t that make you nervous? AG: Only if we hadn’t done a lot of research. Lockheed’s latest model shows that at 1000 mph with a side load such as wind, we can hit a 4-g bump and the wheels still have a 50-percent safety margin. C/D: How far along is the car? AG: All the bits will be done by the end of the year. We’ll be running for the record in 2013 and 2014. We need time to analyze the data so that we’re not taking risks we haven’t seen. The rocket motor will be test-fired shortly in the U.K. The scary bit is this is an adventure in engineering. If it blows up, well, I hope it won’t, but the whole experiment will be done in public. It could go wrong, but that’s a great way to get people genuinely involved. C/D: Is it still a car, or is it a guided missile? AG: Well, it’s Bloodhound , so it’s named after a guided missile. But the FIA requirement is that it has four wheels and be controlled by a driver over two runs within an hour, with all the wheels on the ground. That’s the definition of a car. C/D: Land speed records take years to accomplish, all for a few minutes of terrifying speed. Ever wonder if it’s worth it? AG: Not a few minutes. A few seconds. What makes it worth it is the aura it generates, getting kids interested in science and engineering. We’re running an education program in 5000 schools in the U.K. You know, Newtonian physics is really boring until you apply it to running a jet car 1000 mph. C/D: After 1000 mph, then what? AG: I wasn’t even expecting this challenge. What’s funny is we still hold the land speed record. I was hoping another team would take it away and generate another golden age of LSR competition. But I suspect this will be my last LSR attempt. C/D: You’re famous for speed. Do you have a lot of speeding tickets? AG: Don’t have any at all. C/D: Now that you’re 50, are any folks in your life saying, “Hey, Andy, knock it off”? AG: They’re doing it quietly if they are. Not even my wife has complained. She’s a huge fan of Bloodhound. C/D: Anything you’d have done differently? AG: I can’t find a good answer to that. I served my country and worked in the RAF, the best organization I could ever conceive of. Then my holiday job is driving the world’s fastest car. And now the RAF has a program where old pilots go back to teach cadets, so I’ll see kids learn to fly. I’m excited about that. CHRISTIAN SCHULTE AND THE MANUFACTURER What It Is: Mazda’s fourth-generation MX-5 roadster, in CGI form. Our artist has borrowed the Kodo design language that Mazda has used on recent concepts; shoppers won’t remember its name, but Kodo, we think, is distinctive enough. Otherwise, the fundamentals for the next MX-5 stay the same: two seats, folding roof, rear-wheel drive. This one will be lighter than the current car, cutting 200 to 300 pounds for a new-and-improved total of about 2200. Why It Matters: BMW has the 3-series and Mercedes-Benz the S-class. For certain companies with soul, there are one or two core products that have to be perfect and true to the brand. Mazda’s is the MX-5 Miata, and the company knows it. Not only is the MX-5 the bestselling roadster of all time, it’s the halo car for the firm’s Zoom-Zoom image. It has been and remains one of the benchmarks for driving purity at any price. Platform: New rear-wheel-drive architecture has been developed, and for the time the MX-5 will be the only Mazda to use it. But the platform will be shared outside the company, with Mazda and Fiat entering into an agreement that will see these underpinnings beneath an Alfa Romeo roadster . (We suspect the Alfa may be called Spider.) Powertrains: Odds are good that the MX-5 will get a small four-cylinder engine—about 1.3 liters—turbocharged to make roughly the same 167 hp made by the current larger engine. Mazda will plaster Skyactiv branding all over the engine and the car’s advertisements, which refers to the company’s suite of strategies to efficiently produce power using direct injection and high compression ratios, while also reducing internal friction and rotating mass. This will not be the first factory-turbocharged MX-5; that crown goes to the Mazdaspeed Miata offered briefly during the car’s second generation. Mazda’s recent experimentation with a hotter, more-powerful MX-5 presages an optional sportier version of the next-gen car, too, we think. Competition: Ford Mustang V-6, Hyundai Genesis coupe, Mini Cooper convertible, Mini Roadster, Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ. What Might Go Wrong: Edgy new styling could scare off the single twenty-somethings and empty-nesters who drive MX-5 sales. Mazda’s expedition into turbocharging country could work out brilliantly—delivering great power, refinement, and economy—but inadequate execution could detract from the quintessential roadster. Estimated Arrival and Price: Sometime in late 2013 or early 2014. Prices should start at around the same $25,000 as today. View Photo Gallery PHOTOS (13) Other Stories You Might Like
